Digital passport photo

Online U.S. passport renewal asks for a digital photo, then crops it again in the uploader. PassOkay is the pre-check: will the head, background, and lighting survive that review?

JPEG or PNG. The file is read in this browser and is not uploaded.

One payment of $4.99 removes the watermark and turns on the downloads. Your photo is not sent with the payment. Leave this tab open so you do not have to take the picture again.

State’s upload page, updated May 4, 2026, accepts JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC, or HEIF between 54 KB and 10 MB. The photo has to be in color, taken in the last 6 months, and unedited. Their tool checks the basics and an employee reviews it later.

Do not text the photo to yourself first. Compression from a message thread makes it muddy. Save the original, run it through the checker here, and upload that file. If the wall is wrong, take a new photo. Do not cut the background out.

How to do it

  1. Use the original file. Take the photo on the phone you will renew with, or copy the original file. Skip screenshots and scans of a printed photo.
  2. Run the pre-check. Load it here. The checker looks at face size, centering, eyes, expression, tilt, lighting, and the background.
  3. Upload on the State site. State still crops and decides. A passing check here is not their decision.

Questions

Where can I get a digital passport photo?

You can take it at home and upload it during online renewal, or a photo shop can give you a digital file. Either way it has to be an unedited original.

What file type does online renewal accept?

JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC, or HEIF, from 54 KB to 10 MB. PassOkay exports a JPEG inside that range.

Will State crop my photo?

Yes. The renewal uploader lets you reposition the crop and runs its own check. This page is for finding problems before you get that far.
