Japan visa photo requirements

Japan does not use one photo size at every consulate. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa form says 45 × 45 mm or 2 × 2 inches. Other missions ask for 45 × 35 mm. Check the office where you will apply.

This tool starts from the 45 × 45 mm square on that MOFA form, at 300 DPI (531 × 531 pixels). The head-size row is a framing guide, because the form specifies the paper size more clearly than a single head percentage. Do not treat a passing guide as a published millimeter rule.

White or light background, neutral face, no glasses unless the consulate says otherwise. If your mission’s checklist says 45 × 35, do not force this square file into that slot. Use the Schengen-sized 35 × 45 tool only if the numbers match what they printed.

How to do it

  1. Read the consulate sheet. Find the mission that covers your address. Write down the millimeters they ask for.
  2. Crop the matching shape. Use 45 × 45 here when that is what they printed. Switch documents if they want a different size.
  3. Print or upload their way. The 4×6 sheet is available for the square photo. Confirm they accept a home print before you rely on it.

Questions

What size is a Japan visa photo?

The MOFA application form says 45 × 45 mm or 2 × 2 inches. Some consulates publish 45 × 35 mm instead. Use the sheet for your mission.

Is the head-size percentage official?

No. It is a guide so the face is not tiny or cut off. The official line on the form is the paper size.

Can I use a U.S. passport photo?

Only if your consulate accepts 2 × 2 inches. Many do, because the form lists 2 × 2 as an alternative to 45 × 45 mm. Confirm it.
