UK passport photo
A UK passport photo is 45 mm high and 35 mm wide. The head, crown to chin, is 29 to 34 mm. Printed photos must not be a cut-down of a larger picture, so this page is for the digital route.
Start with a photo

JPEG or PNG. The file is read in this browser and is not uploaded.
Live view is mirrored on a front camera. The photo you keep is not.
Drag to move the crop. Arrow keys nudge. Plus and minus zoom.
Compliance check
PassOkay crops and checks. It does not replace the background, apply filters, or retouch the face.
These checks are estimates. They are not an acceptance decision, and PassOkay is not a government site. Head height is guessed from the chin and forehead, so nudge the crop if the guides miss the hair.
GOV.UK asks for a plain expression, mouth closed, eyes open, and a plain cream or light grey background. The photo is from the last month. Glasses stay off unless you have no choice, and then there cannot be glare. Children under one do not have to have their eyes open. Children under six do not have to look straight at the camera or hold a plain expression.
Online applications use a digital photo and a code from a photo service. PassOkay can size a JPEG to the 45 × 35 proportion and check the head. It does not issue the GOV.UK photo code. Do not print this file and cut it to size for a paper form. GOV.UK rejects cut-down prints.

How to do it
- Take the photo on a light background. Cream or light grey, plain, no shadow. The checker treats a light wall as acceptable, not only pure white.
- Fit 29–34 mm of head. That is about 64–76% of the 45 mm height.
- Use a digital code service. Upload a photo they accept, or visit a booth. Keep this file as the source. Do not submit a scissored print.
Questions
What are the UK passport picture requirements?
45 × 35 mm, head 29–34 mm, cream or light grey background, plain expression, from the last month. Prints must be professionally sized, not cut from a bigger photo.
Can I take a UK passport photo at home?
You can take the digital photo at home and send it through a service that gives you a code. A paper application needs photos that were printed at the right size, not trimmed at the kitchen table.
Does PassOkay give me the photo code?
No. The code comes from the service GOV.UK lists. This site only prepares and checks the image.
