Visa photo
A visa photo is not one size. The U.S. wants a square JPEG. Schengen wants 35 × 45 mm. A China visa print is often 33 × 48 mm. Pick the visa, then crop to that spec.
Start with a photo

JPEG or PNG. The file is read in this browser and is not uploaded.
Live view is mirrored on a front camera. The photo you keep is not.
Drag to move the crop. Arrow keys nudge. Plus and minus zoom.
Compliance check
PassOkay crops and checks. It does not replace the background, apply filters, or retouch the face.
These checks are estimates. They are not an acceptance decision, and PassOkay is not a government site. Head height is guessed from the chin and forehead, so nudge the crop if the guides miss the hair.
Every page linked below has the millimeters, the pixels, the file limit, and the government link we read. The tool on this page starts on the U.S. visa photo: 600 × 600 JPEG, 240 KB or less, head 50–69 percent of the height.
None of these checks replace the consulate’s review. If a row warns, take a new photo. Do not paint a new background behind your head.
Size and file
| Size | Square digital file. Printed photos, when required, are 2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm). |
|---|---|
| Pixels | 600 × 600 px. The visa rules allow 600–1200 px square; 600 matches the State crop tool and stays under 240 KB. |
| Head | 50–69% of the image height, chin to top of head (about 1–1⅜ in on a 2 × 2 print) |
| Background | Plain white or off-white |
| File | JPEG, 240 KB or smaller, color, sRGB as the browser canvas saves it |
| How recent | Taken in the last 6 months |
| Glasses | No, except a rare medical exception with a signed statement |
How to do it
- Choose the country. Open the matching page, or change the document menu in the tool.
- Match their head size. U.S. visas use 50–69% of the frame. Schengen is a taller 35 × 45 mm photo.
- Download only the file they accept. JPEG for U.S. uploads. A 4×6 print sheet when they want paper and home printing is allowed.
Questions
What size is a visa photo?
It depends on the visa. U.S. digital photos are square, 600–1200 px, up to 240 KB. Schengen is 35 × 45 mm. China prints are often 33 × 48 mm.
Can I use a passport photo as a visa photo?
Sometimes. A U.S. passport print is the right size for a U.S. visa print, but the expression rule is stricter on the visa (neutral, not a smile), and the digital file has a 240 KB cap.
Do you edit the background?
No. The check only tells you if the wall looks plain and light.
