I-765, including OPT and EAD, I-90, and N-400 use a passport-style photo. That means 2 × 2 inches, a plain light background, and a recent picture that has not been retouched.

The I-765 instructions point at a passport-style photo. OPT does not get a special size. The green card photo page covers the I-485 packet, including the 30-day note in the policy manual. Use that page if you are adjusting status. Use this one for the work permit, a replacement card, or naturalization.

Eyes should land about 1⅛ to 1⅜ inches from the bottom of the print, the same composition USCIS has used on the 2×2 template. Neutral expression. No glasses. If the form instructions in front of you disagree with this summary, follow the form. They get updated.

How to do it

  1. Confirm the form. I-765, I-90, and N-400 are the forms this page is aimed at. I-485 has its own page.
  2. Crop to 2×2. Run the checker. Head size, eye line, background, and lighting are the rows that matter most.
  3. Print what the form asks for. Many filings want two prints. The 4×6 sheet gives you spares. Cut on the lines.

Questions

What are the USCIS photo requirements?

A passport-style 2×2 inch color photo, white or off-white background, full face, no glasses, not retouched. Check the form you are filing for the number of copies.

Is an OPT photo a different size?

No. OPT is filed on I-765 and uses the same passport-style 2×2 photo.

Can I use my passport photo?

Only if it is recent enough for that form and still looks like you. USCIS can ask for a photo taken within 30 days in some contexts. When in doubt, take a new one.
